About MVMC Integrated Behavioral Health

Integrated Behavioral Health (IBH) in primary healthcare is a team-based approach that offers collaboration with a standard approach to care. This model combines a multidisciplinary team approach that integrates treatment, program structure, and payment to deliver care to the whole person instead of treating isolated symptoms or diagnoses. This team structure is innovative and fits in with the belief in overall wellness.

IBH support combines medical and behavioral health services for chronic, challenging, co-occurring conditions to patients who present to a primary care setting with physical symptoms due to stress, mental health or substance use disorders. It is known that emotional health is connected to physical health, thus comprehensive care is provided by a multidisciplinary team who works with people to improve their quality of life

Substance use disorders and mental illness, also known as behavioral health issues, are among the chief health concerns within communities in Montana. Few primary care practices were able, until recently, to work with a behavioral health provider to assist in identifying and treating these issues.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  • Why Integrated Behavioral Health?
    • Studies indicate that the integrated behavioral health model of care strengthens results while concentrating on illnesses ranging from diabetes to depression and anything in between. Early diagnosis and treatment can lower the chances of a medical emergency in the future and may assist in reducing health care costs. IBH in a health care setting provides specialty behavioral health services to those who need them most particularly when Montana has a short supply of behavioral mental health services.
  • How does IBH Work?
    • Integrated behavioral health assists primary care in focusing on the whole person. The IBH model of care begins with screening for behavioral health issues during a primary care visit. Patients receive care for common issues like depression, anxiety, and substance use disorders as part of the same visit to their primary care provider. The patient’s primary care provider can ask the behavioral health provider to meet with the patient during their clinic visit. IBH includes care coordination to facilitate addressing barriers that can create hardships in getting well, like housing, food needs, and lack of transportation.
    • The IBH model utilizes a variety of evidence-based interventions. These interventions assist patients with prevention, functional improvement, symptom reduction, and better quality of life, as well as treatment for acute and chronic conditions. Patient progress determines the number of appointments a patient will have with the behavioral health provider. The patient and behavioral health provider can see each other during a visit to a primary care provider or they can schedule an appointment outside of this visit. Integrated behavioral health is a way to address behavioral health needs in a setting where patients are already receiving care. This can help reduce stigma attached to seeing a behavioral health provider and helps to normalize the need for behavioral support.
  • How do I get started?
    • The behavioral health provider works as part of the primary health care team and typically sees patients for an initial assessment where a treatment plan is developed based on the health care goals of the patient and primary care provider. The behavioral health provider will work directly with the patient and the patient’s primary care provider to assist the patient, as necessary.
